It is designed to be slightly smaller than the tent floor to prevent water pooling and to help extend the tent floor's life by reducing the normal wear and tear from wet and/or abrasive sharp ground. The 3P footprint is also usable independently in fly-footprint mode with stakes and poles. The footprint is color-coded to 3P tent floor with quick connect buckles for easy setup.
